The flashing yum cha /dim sum sign caught my attention driving past. Came in for lunch. It's tiny, only 8 tables with no trolleys. Menu has lots of photos. You mark your dishes on the order form. Wanted to try something different so ordered the lychee prawn balls and rice noodles with crispy prawns, both outstanding. Then went for the staples of chicken feet, beef balls, pork ribs and soup dumplings. The dumplings were disappointing and the pork ribs bland. The rest were good. Also a big bottle of siraacha on each table. The plates are a tad cheaper than the larger yum cha venues.
I drove 40 minutes to try this place for breakfast—and it was totally worth it! Beancurd Sheet Rolls and wonton noodles in soup were absolutely delicious. The staff were super friendly and even took the time to chat with us, which made the whole experience really pleasant. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. I’ve already made plans to come back next week with friends!
Overall: 6/7 Yum Cha gem! Highly recommend! Location is a bit out of the way without a car, but the food is top notch. Radish cake: 5/7 Clean tastes, clearly can see the radish. Har gow / prawn dumpling: 6/7 Looks a bit funky but tastes great. Skin is super light and the prawn is bouncy. Seafood beancurd: 4/7 Wasn’t a fan of the various corn and stuffs they’ve added in. Still tastes pretty good though otherwise. Would appreciate crispier / more structural beancurd. And wrapped tighter. Steamed spare ribs: 5/7 Pretty standard yum Cha, executed well and delicately steamed to be tender. Rice roll w crispy prawn: 6/7 Super crispy, yum. Prawn inside is super bouncy too. Prawn Siu Mai: 5/7 Less prawn, more meat. Prefer the har gow personally. Black custard bun: 4/7 Others really liked it but personally not a fan of the salted egg custard flavour in general. Steamed beef ball: 5/7 Good flavour, clearly tastes the beef and not too much other stuff mixed into it. Fried pork mushroom dumpling (carrot shape): 6/7 Lovely. Comes out super hot and there’s a good amount of filling inside that is delicious. Satay tripe: 5/7 Perhaps could have been cooked a touch more but still good. Relies on marination rather than sauce, so it is flavourful throughout.
Decent yumcha, limited selection, but some things like the lychee shaped prawn balls were done quite well. Pricing is reasonable. Place is small, but looks clean and is comfortable. Parking on the side streets.
We tried this place from recommendation. Lots of hype about it and was looking forward to it. The dishes were reasonably priced for 4 pax at roughly 25-30 per person depending what the order is. They are innovative making their dumplings and dishes creatively cute. Tables were a little too big for the little space they have. Wish they provided smaller tables and not extra huge marble tables to serve more customers. Early dining advisable as there are only like about 8 tables in this tiny shoplot! As mentioned previous threads or reviews the chicken feet and pork ribs were bland. Adding some sauce would be better. I like how they innovate the dishes but taste wise it is average. May come back again to try their desert pau and other cute dishes
Situated in a quiet suburb, The Fung Choi offers traditional dim sum as well as contemporary dishes, such as Shrimp Balls in Lychee Shape (lychee shaped dumpling), Deep Fried Pork Mince & Mushroom Dumpling (carrot shaped dumpling) and Rice Roll with Crispy Prawn (green coloured rice rolls). Those are all my favourite items. There are not a lot of tables in the restaurant so avoid busy lunch hours especially on the weekends.
The restaurant is tiny for a yumcha establishment. Waited about 30 minutes for a table of two. Once I got seated I quickly made my selections and gave them the order slip as soon as possible. It took another 20 minutes for the first dish to arrive, which came out cold and I had to send it back. The next 7 dishes came out consistently up til the last dish. I think they had forgotten my last dish, because the tables that came after me had received that same dish. Took another 40 minutes for the last dish to arrive. For a weekend lunch there's only two personnel front of house serving the tables, clearing tables and sorting payments. Service is not top notch. The food is tasty, I'm glad I tried it but I won't be returning to waste time waiting. The concept of yumcha doesn't require waiting for dishes to come out, it should be ready.
As a yum cha lover, I had to try this place to see what it was about! It’s quite small place vs typical yum cha places. The options are quite scarce but they have the basics (some with a twist!). The carrot shaped fried dumpling was amazing!! Staff were much friendlier than what you see. What I didn’t really like about it was the single use cutlery, I get it but it takes away the yum cha experience. Overall the food was yummy and reasonably priced, great for a quick lunch, but for the authentic experience, this might not be the place.
